Why Pray?
On Sunday I taught my last Sunday school class before we take a summer break. The lesson was on prayer and I had a 4 year old, a 7 year old, an 11 year old, and a 13 year old. Talk about a challenge! It turned out okay. We all laughed at each other as we recognized the vast differences in what we pray for. We covered everything from Barbies to war. Actually prayer is something I’m fascinated with. I’ve been doing some reading on the subject and am trying to put into practice some of what I’ve learned. There are breath prayers where you repeat a phrase as you breath in and another as you breath out. There are methods and techniques, what to pray for, and how to address the one you pray to, but the burning question raised in our Sunday school class by one of the kids was, “What happens when you pray? I mean you talk to God but he can’t answer. What good is it?”

Just as Joanna Simpson so eloquently pointed out in her sermon, no matter how strong our faith is; we all hit the wall sometimes. We all have a point (sometimes several points) where we question where God is or what God’s doing or if, in fact, God does exist. I mean let’s face it, this is complicated stuff. Even the theologians don’t have all the answers but one thing I do know, God does answer prayers. Sometimes we don’t get the answer we hoped for and sometimes we don’t recognize the answer until much later. I told the little girl that asked the question, that the more we talk to God the more comfortable we get with talking to God and the more we recognize when God is telling us something. It’s kind of like when you meet someone new and he/she calls you up, you don’t recognize the voice at first. After you talk to them on the phone several times you become more familiar with their vocal patterns and as soon as they say “hello” you know who it is. So it is with God.

We all have questions. We always will have questions but we can listen for the master’s voice and gain more clarity in the paths we should follow.

COSTUME UPKEEP
We need someone to go through our costumes, do any mending that is needed, and wash them to be ready for fall Sunday School classes. If you’re able and willing to take on this summer project, contact Rebecca at the church.

SUBS NEEDED:
We are trying to compile a list of possible fill-ins for our church secretary when she has to be out of the office for either vacation or family emergencies. If you are willing to be called upon in a pinch to work the desk for either a couple of hours, a half day or a full day, please contact Lori Bowles, the church secretary, at 682-2836 to add your name to the list. Lori can also provide more information about what will be required of you during your shift and answer any other questions you might have.
